Leave Out Violence

Leave Out Violence (LOVE) is a registered charity that has specialized in youth violence prevention in Canada since 1993. LOVE was founded with a vision of what it takes to help a young person overcome adversity and become successful, and over the years, we have become an effective, results-oriented organization uniquely capable of making a difference in the lives of youth. Thanks in part to the generosity of the Flavelle Foundation, this August LOVE ran our 5-day Leadership Camp. LOVE Youth Leaders from under-served Toronto communities joined together with youth from across Canada in a common cause: to understand the violence that has encircled their lives and learn how to lead their peers in breaking the cycle of violence in their schools and community. Camp workshops, conducted by professionals and senior Youth Leaders, included topics such as: communication skills, presentation techniques, forgiveness, drugs, media, telling your story etc. LOVE thanks the Flavelle Foundation for making this experience possible!

Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation

In recognition of Sir Ernest MacMillan’s celebrated career as a conductor, in particular his many years with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (1942-1957) and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (1931-56), the Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation offered an award in choral conducting. The finals were a key event at the Association of Canadian Choral Communities’ biennial national conference in Ottawa in May 2012. The three finalists rehearsed the Elmer Iseler Singers for between 30 and 40 minutes each in front of the jury and live audience. The members of the jury were nationally recognized figures in choral music. The Flavelle Foundation family grant championed by Dinny Biggs, was used to offset travel and accommodation expenses for finalists and jurors to take part. This unique event, representing MacMillan and Iseler, two iconic figures in the history of Canadian music, reflects the deep commitment of both men to the development of Canada’s culture, and their understanding of the importance of fostering excellence in young Canadian musicians as a key means of achieving that end.

St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation

Toronto Public Health estimates that, every year about 300 infants are born to homeless women- many without prenatal supports. In response, the CAP organized a workgroup to look at ways to motivate young women who are at-risk to attend prenatal care and become active participants in their health care. The result is an innovative, prenatal program called My Baby and Me Passport Program that helps to reduce risks for young, homeless moms and their babies by creating a portable health record to help keep track of appointments and health information. The program also includes practical supports and incentives such as TTC fare and grocery vouchers. It also incorporates measures to protect the privacy of the young women who participate. 94% of the young women in the pilot group gave birth to healthy and full-term babies. My Baby and Me was awarded a Celebrating Innovations in Health Care award in the fall of 2009.

MS Society of Canada – Ontario Division

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease that affects vision, hearing, memory, balance and mobility mostly diagnosed in young adults, aged 15-40. An estimated 55,000-75,000 Canadians have multiple sclerosis with a prevalence rate of one in 1,000 across the country. In Ontario alone, approximately 25,000 individuals have diagnoses of MS.

Funds received from the Sir Joseph Flavelle Foundation ensure Ontarians living with MS have access to critical support. In 2012, the Ontario Division directly administered the following:

  • - 630 requests for special assistance funding, including services for respite care, attendant care, transportation, and emergency response services
  • - 780 requests for equipment funding, including mobility aids , bathroom aids, lifts, hospital beds and incontinence supplies
  • - The delivery of 200 Newly Diagnosed Kits, which contain vital information about MS, disease management, specific symptoms, nutrition and treatment

The Sir Joseph Flavelle Foundation also funds research required to find a cure for MS and develop new and better treatments for the disease.

The MS Society of Canada greatly appreciates the generosity of the Elizabeth Flavelle sponsored grant from the Sir Joseph Flavelle Foundation.
